Creating a deaf-friendly world doesn't happen from the efforts of one person alone. We can't sit and wait for the world to become deaf-friendly, we, as a collective group must roll up our sleeves and do the work. We certainly can't pick every battle, but we can make an impact by modeling for others what we want, in our everyday lives.

Baltimore is a town of depth and breadth; fanning out from a picturesque harbor, it boasts both the culinary delights of Little Italy and its culinary love affair with crabs. The historical town is known for jobs in science, engineering and technology as well as its proximity to one of the most foremost teaching hospitals in the nation. And for several days in August it was the host to one of the largest Black Deaf gatherings in the country.

Deaf businesses have been booming, so much that there has been local and nationwide news coverage. This is thanks to technology making it easier to communicate, run a business, and attract customers. On the flip side, as technology use expands, new barriers are emerging for Deaf business owners. In particular, social media advertising solutions are not deaf-friendly.

Though I was born deaf, I had very few opportunities to meet culturally Deaf, ASL-fluent peers until after college. As I began learning sign language for the first time, I noticed that many Deaf and hard of hearing people gravitated towards careers in tech.
