One of the most disempowering moments we experience as Deaf consumers is when we face relinquishing control over interpreters to those who don’t know our needs, are driven by corporate profits, and serving personal interests. It requires a leap of faith, every time when we request an interpreter at an unfamiliar doctor’s office or agency, in hopes they know how to secure an interpreter, that they use a reputable agency, and that the agency in turn uses qualified interpreters that fit our particular needs.

Ask anyone from the mainstream what a CODA is, and you’ll get answers like “Led Zeppelin’s album,” or “the tail-end of a music piece.” Close, but no cigar ... at least not from the Deaf Community. “MOTHER + FATHER + DEAF” (the signs used to describe a CODA) are statistically common within the community.

For most people, Vegas' code is simple: You win, some, and you (mostly) lose some. More than 25 years ago, Marilyn Smith took one of the biggest gambles of her life: She quit her job to start a non-profit to serve Deaf and Deaf-Blind victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Defying the odds at the DeafNation World Expo 2012 in Las Vegas, the Seattle founder and former Executive Director of ADWAS accepted the DeafNation Inspiration Award.
