Captioning In-Flight Entertainment: The Final Frontier

Scientific progress doesn't always happen in logical order. In 1921, Aeromarine Airways showed the world's first in-flight movie. In 1969, we put a man on the moon. In 2005, tourists started booking with Virgin Galactic to take spaceflights. In 2009, U.S. Department of Transport ruled that all aircraft videos, DVDs and other audio-visual displays be captioned for safety and/or informational purposes.

Confession: Here in deafREVIEW’s flagship city of Seattle, we’re still mourning the Seahawks’ by-the-skin-of-our-teeth 28-30 tearjerker loss to the Atlanta Falcons en route to Super Bowl’s Mercedes Benz Superdome in NOLA. Wads of Kleenex later, we’re ready to move on. That’s because it’s only T minus 7 days to SuperBowl XLVII, and there ain’t a moment left to waste on anything but trash talk, betting pools, Manti Te’o memes, and geeking out over point spread bets.

We debated about the seven Tour de France titles Lance Armstrong lost, watched from afar as Greece wrangled debt-restructuring deals, mourned Malala’s brave plight, as Syrian conflicts raged.

What a busy year it has been for the National Association of the Deaf (NAD). Not only has it battled Netflix in court for closed captioning, rallied the Internet Captioning Deadlines, and sued Chase Bank for refusing Relay calls, NAD has been hard at work bringing in a new generation of movers and shakers: It recently elected Chris Wagner as the NAD’s new President.
