Swedish Emergency Room - First Hill

Anonymous User

I had an accident and needed to be checked out to make sure I was ok. I requested an (in-person) ASL interpreter more than once. They acted as if my request would be taken care of. When I got inside my room, I soon realized they were going to use VRI. No in-person interpreter was called. They also even asked the person I was dating at that time if he would interpret for me when he barely knew any sign language. That's a big no-no and in violation of my rights as a Deaf person. Luckily, he declined so they used the VRI instead. I had trouble seeing the VRI interpreter and there were technology issues. I had no interpreter with me while they did some tests outside of the room. It was a very frightening and frustrating experience to struggle to be able to communicate in that kind of situation, especially when I had a head injury and was trying to focus on everything. Last thing I needed to worry about was being able to communicate, yet it was one of my biggest problems that night. I think my headache was bigger than what it supposed to be with struggling to advocate for myself and trying to understand what was happening despite of everything that was going on. I don't ever want to use this facility again and will try to make sure I go out of my way to another hospital or emergency room who won't attempt to use a non-certificated person to interpret and ignore my requests for an in-person ASL interpreter. Horrible, horrible experience.
