When my dining companion and I stopped by to wait for a table, someone (a busser?) approached us and started to speak while looking in the opposite direction. When I tapped on his shoulder to let him know that we were Deaf, he freaked out and left to tell the bartender about us. It looked like she told him to go back to us and have us sit down at a table. We were thinking uh oh, will this be what the rest of our evening will be like with someone who wasn't comfortable with us?
Luckily, we had a server named Mac who was amazing. He wrote on paper with us, maintained eye contact, had a positive attitude and made sure we got everything we wanted for our dinner. The homemade chips and tacos were delicious. We were relieved and beyond happy to experience a wonderful evening because of our deaf-friendly server. Thank you, Mac!!
P.S. When we left, my dining companion told the busser that he was doing a good job in hopes of putting him at ease about his first time encounter with Deaf people.
